and 2018, respectively (Figure 3).
According to the Bureau of Labor
Statistics (BLS), U.S. consumers
benefited from lower retail egg
prices in 2016 than in several years
prior. The U.S. retail price of eggs
sat at $1.38/dozen in 2016 based on
BLS estimates (Figure 4).
Consumers in the U.S., like
around the world, are increasingly
becoming aware of animal welfare
and demanding cage-free eggs, as
evidenced by retail data from IRI,
Grocery Headquarters. Data show
that private-label sales still account
for the majority of fresh egg brands
in the U.S. in 2017 (Figure 5). But,
among all the specific brands, the
three leading brands in terms of
retail sales dollars - Eggland's Best,
Pete & Gerry's and Nellie's - all
offer cage-free or free-range eggs.
Not only are cage-free eggs being
purchased by consumers in grocery
stores, they are increasingly being
purchased by foodservice establishments, too. In response to consumer
demand, foodservice companies
and restaurants like Nestle, Dunkin'
Donuts, Kellogg Company and more
are making pledges to only source
cage-free eggs for their products.
This shift is not just happening in
the U.S., but worldwide, with companies like General Mills pledging
to source only cage-free eggs for its
operations worldwide by 2025. Even
Singapore recently saw its first cagefree pledge as The Lo & Behold
Group, a hospitality company, committed to converting to cage-free
eggs by 2020. ■
