Growth will be fueled by expanding demand around the world for this lower-cost protein thanks to lower production costs and product prices than red meats, ac- FIGURE 1: cording to the latest Agricultural Outlook projections by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD). In comparison, pig meat production is forecast at 127.5 million metric tons, beef and veal production at nearly 76 million metric tons, and sheep meat at just 17.5 million metric tons by 2026 (Figure 2). Though modest, production gains continue to be fueled by increased worldwide consumption of poultry meat as FAO projects that, of all additional meat consumed over the next decade, poultry will account for almost 45 percent of the total. However, poultry meat production will still have seen its greatest gains over the past decade compared with the next decade, with the greatest gains in production volume seen in 2005, 2007, 2008 and 2010, slowing through World poultry meat production and consumption projections to 2026 Copyright WATT Global Media 2017 Production Consumption 135,000 x 1,000 metric tons, rtc 130,000 125,000 120,000 115,000 110,000 105,000 100,000 Average 2014-16 2017 2018 2019 2020 2021 Year 2022 2023 2024 2025 2026 Source: OECD-FAO Agricultural Outlook 2017-26 www.WATTAgNet.com ❙ 2017
